Dell monitor bad color with MBP closed lid

I just found this problem and found a fix so Im sharing it in case someone else has this problem too.

If you have a Dell U3421WE monitor (isn’t it pretty?) and you’re connecting it to the new (2021) Apple M1 based MacBookPro 17,1 and you want to connect to the monitor while the lid is closed, you’ll find it does something funny with the colors. Whites looks greenish and the shadows look opaque…

Like this:

There are two ways to fix it:

  1. Hit calibrate, and when you get to the white point menu, uncheck “Use native white point”, use slider to move to your preference and, done.

2. The second way is to use the monitor menu, select Color and under Preset Modes, select anything but Standard and it should remove the halo. Find one that is comfortable for you and select it.

Hope this helps someone. Such an annoying little bug too.

Oh and one more thing…

Really Dell? you couldn’t put the three flat A type connectors and move the B to the RJ45 side? Tell that designer I am very disappointed at them and I hope their beer goes flat and is served luke warm.
